What “reconstitution” means

Reconstitution generally refers to the process of adding a liquid (a “diluent”) to a substance supplied in a dried or lyophilized form, in order to return it to a liquid state. The term is used broadly across pharmacy and lab contexts, not just for peptides.

Terms that commonly appear alongside it

  • Lyophilized: freeze-dried into a powder or cake for stability and storage.
  • Diluent: the liquid added during reconstitution, such as bacteriostatic water.
  • Vial: the sealed container holding the substance before and after reconstitution.
  • Concentration: the resulting strength once a diluent has been added, typically expressed in mg/mL.
